Women's Tennis Falters to Fort Wayne, Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -  The Leathernecks dropped two matches on Thursday, (Mar. 14) to Fort Wayne and then host Kansas City. 

The matches on Thursday marked the first for Western in Summit League play tp this point in the 2013 season. 

The Leathernecks struggled early against the Fort Wayne Mastodons and dropped the match 7-0.

Fort Wayne took control in singles play and that carried over into doubles. It was Anita Henestrosa defeating Yessenia Mejia at number one singles 6-0, 6-0. Elana Berdichevsky fell at number two singles to Caterina Kiefer 6-1, 6-0. At number three singles Miloslava Shustova topped Megan Pazdernick 6-1, 6-1. Holly Conlin faltered at number four singles to Marcy Huck 6-1, 6-0. Number five singles saw Theresa Neumeyr beat Kristen Havelka 6-0, 6-0. Finally at number six singles Ese Davis fell 6-0, 6-0 to Sonya Sorokina. 

Doubles play was also controlled by the Mastodons as the pairing of Kiefer/Henestrosa defeated Berdichevsky/Pazdernick, 8-0. Mejia and Conlin fell to Shustova/Neumeyr 8-1. Lastly, the pairing of Jessica Callahan and Jessica Theobald were defeated by Sorokina/Huck, 8-1. 

Later in the day the Purple and Gold took on the Kansas City Kangaroos, but fell 7-0.

The Kangeroos made it tough on the Leathernecks in both singles and doubles play throughout. 

It was Laura Bouet defeating Mejia 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles. At number two singles, Berdichevsky fell to Eva Dalvai 6-0, 6-0. Pazdernick faltered at number three singles to Dimitra Stavrianakou by a 6-0, 6-0 tally. Suzan Lisenby got past Conlin at number four singles 6-0, 6-0. Havelka played Maddie Schulte at number five singles but fell 6-0, 6-0. Finally, at number six singles Gabby Pintos defeated Theobald 6-1, 6-0. 

In doubles play, the pairing of Bouet/Dalvai defeated Berdichevsky/Davis 8-1. Mejia/Conlin fell to Amelie Amsallem and Lisenby, 8-2. Lastly, Callahan/Theobald were done in by Pintos/Schulte, 8-0. 

Western is back in action tomorrow against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Full results will be made available following both matches tomorrow evening.
