MACOMB, Ill. - Wins from Mitch Granger and Bradley Holt were not enough for the victory, as Western Illinois men's tennis ended its season with a 5-2 loss to Fort Wayne on Sunday.
The Mastodons (9-16, 2-3 Summit) clinch the fourth seed in the Summit League Tournament via a scoring tiebreaker. Western Illinois (8-17, 2-3) could have clinched a spot with a win or 4-3 loss.
In doubles play, Patrick Hammers and Brandon Meeker teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
With the doubles point on the line, IPFW needed a tiebreak to defeat Mitch Granger and Ben Yue at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (7-5).
Mitch Granger put the Leathernecks on the board with a straight sets victory at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
With the team trailing 4-1, Western needed both Holt and Yue to come from behind and win to clinch a spot in the conference playoffs.
After dropping the first set, Holt came back to earn the 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory at third singles and keep the Leathernecks alive.
But the Mastodons clinched the tournament berth, as Ben Yue fell in a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 contest at No. 4 singles.
"We're certainly disappointed with today's results, especially after having two chances to clinch a spot in the playoffs and being unable to do so," head coach Chris Kane said. "But our players certainly were resilient, and continued to battle even when they were down."
