#WIU13n13: Student-Athlete Academic Success Lands at #13

Western Illinois student-athletes had an incredibly successful academic year in 2012-13, capped off by one of the most impressive semesters of recent years this spring when Fighting Leatherneck student-athletes recorded a grade point average of 3.07, the third-highest mark in program history.

By exceeding a 2.965 GPA in the spring, Leatherneck student-athletes have now outscored the general student body's GPA for 12 straight semesters. Additionally, nearly 60 percent of student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher (231-of-392 - 58.92 percent), with 36 tallying a perfect 4.0 mark. Ninety-four student-athletes (23.97 percent) also earned semester honors, requiring a GPA of 3.6 or above.

As far as earning diplomas, twenty-four Leatherneck student-athletes walked across the stage after the fall semester, while a total of 70 did so in the spring. Out of the 94 student-athletes, five earned a Master's degree, and 89 received a Bachelor's degree.

While The Summit League's Commissioner's List of Excellence recipients have yet to be announced, the Fighting Leathernecks had 59 student-athletes named to the Summit League Fall Academic Honor Roll, 36 of which were tabbed Distinguished Scholars, and 130 to the Winter-Spring Academic Honor Roll with 55 receiving Distinguished Scholar honors.

On top of all that,18 student-athletes were tabbed either Summit League or Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic. Besides being tabbed a Distinguished Scholar, Sarah Hall from the women's soccer team was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. Teammates Amber Davis and Katie Condon were Second Team NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region selections. For the second consecutive year, football's Jimmy Holtschlag was a CoSIDA Academic All-District and FCS Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star selection. Sammy Marshall from softball also earned Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
