Leathernecks look for second straight win against IUPUI

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's basketball team looks for its second straight win in conference action when they play host to IUPUI on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Last time out against IPFW
Senior Ashley Lord scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lift the Fighting Leathernecks over IPFW, 58-55, in an overtime thriller on Monday, Feb. 1.

Anne Borgertpoepping chipped in 12 points and Jordon O'Brien added 11 points. Anneloes The Leathernecks took one less shot than the Mastodons (60-59) in the contest, but both team's struggled offensively as IPFW only connected on 28.3 percent of their shots to Western's 28.8 percentage from the floor.

Western won the battle on the glass, pulling down seven more rebounds than IPFW (51-44). Lord had a game-high 16 rebounds followed by Borgertpoepping who pulled down nine boards and Jackie Barton who grabbed seven.

Western's defense held IPFW's leading scorer Stephanie Rosado to a season-low three points. The Mastodon's 55 points was their third-lowest scoring effort on the year.

Scouting the Jaguars
IUPUI dropped their last outing against Oakland, 74-55, in Indianapolis. Ebony Davis led the team with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Gretchen Gaskin scored 10 points in the loss.

Kerah Nelson leads the offense with 13.1 points per game and Jessica Huffman has added 10.2 points per game this season.

Against IUPUI
The Leathernecks hold the all-time series record (19-8) with the Jaguars and won the last contest between the two teams, 52-44, in Indianapolis on Jan. 9, 2010.

O'Brien led the Western offense with a game-high 25 points while Erica Lewis added seven. Kodde, Jackie Rieger and Michele Salvatori added four points each. All eight players for the Leathernecks who stepped on the floor scored in the contest.

The Jaguars won the battle on the glass, pulling down three more rebounds than the Leathernecks (32-29). Lewis and Lord led Western with six rebounds each. Borgertpoepping and Kodde chipped in with four each.

Barton earns CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic District V honors
Barton earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic District V second team honors as she holds a 4.0 grade point average. The junior psychology major averages 4.2 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds with 5.3 per game. The Freeport, Ill., native has been an instant impact on this year's squad in only her first season with the Leathernecks, making 11 starts and averaging 25.6 minutes per game.

Barton was one of only three women's basketball players in The Summit League to earn the distinctive academic accolades.

Western defense ranks among the top of the conference
The Leathernecks currently rank third in the league in scoring defense, only allowing 61 points per game.

The defense also currently ranks third in the conference in steals, recording 9.2 steals per game. Borgertpoepping leads the team in steals with 52 and ranks fourth in the conference with 2.4 steals per game.

Defense hold Summit League foes to season-low outings
In Western's last game against IPFW, the Leathernecks held the Mastodon's to 55 points, their third-lowest scoring effort on the year. Against Oakland on Jan. 30, Western held the Golden Grizzlies to its second lowest scoring effort of the season (52 points).
