MACOMB, Ill. - After raising nearly $11,000 last year, the Western Illinois University track and field team has announced the Second Annual Shaymus Relays to be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 6, at the Western Illinois Track at Hanson Field.
The event is being held for the second time in as many years as a way to raise funds for nine-year-old Shaymus Guinn (son of Tony Guinn, Western Illinois women’s soccer coach), who has been diagnosed and is undergoing treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma, which is a rare form of cancer.
Hosted by the Western Illinois track and field team, the goal is to raise support and funds to help offset the expenses for the Guinn family with 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit the Guinn family.
The Shaymus relays consists of track and field activities for first through sixth grades, including one field event, two running events and one relay. The first four events are $10 and additional events after the four can be purchased for $5 per event.
T-shirts are also being sold for $10 each in an effort to raise money. Participation is not required to purchase a T-shirt. Event registration forms and T-shirt order forms are due to 103 Western Hall by Friday, April 23.
Last year the community and campus came together and the team hopes to have the same type of support this season. Hy-Vee, Niemann’s County Market and Macomb Glass Incorporated aided in the success of last year’s event. Any businesses looking to become a part of the event or those with questions can email TheShaymusRelays@gmail.com.
