Leatherneck Alum in the Spotlight: Kyle Peterman

MACOMB, Ill.  -  Recent Western Illinois University graduate Kyle Peterman won the 70th annual Monroe Invitational Championship, June 19, held at the Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, New York.

After being named the 2010 Summit League Golfer of the Year just days prior (second time earning the honor), Peterman recorded an 11-under-par 269 to become the league's first-ever champion of the event that features some of the top collegiate and amateur talent in the country. Of the 177 competitors, only nine players recorded scores under par, with the closest score to Peterman being a 274 recorded by Eastern Michigan's Cam Burke. Other competitors to finish in the top-10 on the leaderboard came from New Mexico State, Washington, Wofford, NC State, Monroe Golf Club, University of Iowa and University of Michigan.

Playing for the first time in this particular tournament, Peterman recorded an eagle and 16 birdies throughout the four-day event. The Sherman, Ill., native joins recent past champions from Ohio State, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Australia and Wake Forest to name a few.

Peterman fired a pair of 64s (six-under) for the first two rounds and came in one under in his third round before finishing the final day with a 72. During his time at Western Illinois, Peterman won three tournament titles, played in the 2009 US Open, earned league Golfer of the Year honors twice and was a 2010 NCAA West Regional participant.

Peterman earned a degree in recreation, parks and tourism administration in the spring 2010.
