ELMHURST,
Ill. - Three Western Illinois University sport
programs received the Summit League's 2009-10 Team Academic Achievement Award,
as announced by the league office.
The Leatherneck Volleyball (100 percent), Softball (tied 75 percent) and Men's
Cross Country (91 percent) program had the highest percentage of their eligible
student-athletes named to the Commissioner's List.
In addition, 60 percent of Western Illinois' student-athletes were selected to
the Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. In order for a student-athlete
to be selected, he/she must carry a 3.00 or better cumulative GPA, achieve
sophomore academic standing at the institution, have used a year of eligibility
and be on the squad list in the sport in which he/she is nominated. Transfers,
graduate students and junior college graduates must have completed one academic
year at the nominating institution. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and
first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.
South Dakota State
claimed The Summit League's Institutional Academic Achievement Award with a
league-best 69 percent of its list-eligible student-athletes recognized, edging
North Dakota State, who had 68 percent honored. IPFW and Southern Utah came in
third with 63 percent while Western and Oakland tied for fifth at 60 percent.
