MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois volleyball player Ellen Miller (Chicago, Ill./Marist) has been named as the Papa John's Scholar Athlete of the Week for her accomplishments on the court and in the classroom.
A senior kinesiology-teacher education major, Miller currently holds a 3.51 cumulative grade point average and was one of 43 Western Illinois student-athletes to earn the 2009-10 Student-Athlete Provost Award. The award was given to those student-athletes who achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average and had been in residence with Western Illinois for one year.
Miller, who is ninth all-time on Western Illinois' career assists list, has been named to the Summit League's Fall Academic All-League Team three times in her career. Miller's accomplishments in the classroom helped the volleyball team earn the Summit League's 2009-10 Team Academic Achievement Award and the 2009-10 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.
Voted as the team's most valuable player in 2009, Miller was one of four Western Illinois student-athletes named to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American list in April. The award recognizes athletes for their academic and personal accomplishments as well as their integrity as student-athletes.
Miller led the Summit League in assists (1,134) last season and was named the Summit League's "Defensive Player of the Week" for the week of September 21, 2009. Over the weekend at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Invitational in Peoria, Ill., Miller led the Fighting Leathernecks with 48 digs and also recorded 45 assists and four kills.
