MACOMB, Ill. - After raising over $11,000 for two consecutive years, the Western Illinois University track and field team has announced the Third Annual Shaymus Relays to be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 5, at the Western Illinois Track at Hanson Field. Early registration (April 22) has passed but interested parties can still register on the day of the event.
The event is being held for the third time in as many years as a way to raise funds for ten-year-old Shaymus Guinn (son of Tony Guinn, Western Illinois women's soccer coach), who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a rare form of cancer.
Hosted by the Western Illinois track and field team, the goal is to raise support and funds to help offset the expenses for the Guinn family. All of the proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Guinn family.
The Shaymus Relays consists of track and field activities for first through sixth grades, including one field event, two running events and one 4x2 relay. A group picture with everyone in attendance will be taken following the youth track events. Â
The first four events are $10 and additional events after the four can be purchased for $5 per event. Several relays for Western Illinois staff and students will be held following the group photo and the cost to enter the relays is $20 per team.
T-shirts are being sold for $10 each in an effort to raise money but participants are not required to purchase a T-shirt. A limited number of T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event.
New this year is a partnership between the Shaymus Relays and CORBINstock, the on-campus music festival that benefits the Guinn family as well. Live music will be playing at CORBINstock from 5-10 p.m. and the concert is open to the general public. CORBINstock will take place right next to The Shaymus Relays this year.
Last year the community and campus came together and the team hopes to have the same type of support this season. Several local businesses aided in the success of last year's event. Any businesses looking to become a part of the event or those with questions can email Mike McGraw, the event's organizer and a senior on the track and field squad, at ms-mcgraw@wiu.edu.
