MACOMB, Ill. - Sixty-six Western Illinois University
student athletes were awarded degrees at the class of 2011 graduation
ceremonies held in Western Hall Saturday, May 14.
The 2011 Spring/Summer commencement ceremony honored 62 student-athletes
who received their Bachelor's degree and four students who received
their Master's degree.
"I am very proud of the Spring/Summer 2011 graduating class," said Lisa
Melz, Director of Athletic Academic Services and Senior Woman
Administrator. "In my tenure, it is the largest class of student-athlete graduates by number at Western Illinois University."
"What makes the list
impressive to me is not that we have over 60 graduating, but that four of
those students continued post baccalaureate work at Western Illinois
University and are now completing graduate degrees," Melz added. "The
student-athletes, coaches, staff and administration expect nothing less
than a student-athlete to walk across the stage and I am happy to say
that is occurring at a very high frequency at Western Illinois
University."
In October, the
department announced that 10 of its athletic programs saw a graduation
success rate of 80 percent or higher. Seven of those programs graduated
better than 90 percent of their student-athletes.
During the Fall 2010 semester, Western Illinois student-athletes turned in a
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for the fourth consecutive semester. Twenty-five
student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA, 97 earned University Honors posting a 3.6
GPA and 212 (53.7 percent) earned a 3.0 or above. Leatherneck student-athletes
again surpassed the University's cumulative GPA - 2.93 for the Fall
semester.
