SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Junior Dana LaRue won her first outdoor conference title and Western Illinois collected three top-three finishes Friday (May 13) on Day Two of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
LaRue, the 2009-10 indoor shot put champion, won the event Friday with a throw of 46-10.25. LaRue, who set a personal best last weekend at Wisconsin's Twilight Invitational (48-10.75), was named to her second outdoor all-league squad Tuesday and entered the championships as the No. 2 seed in the event. Senior Jessica Ortega, who placed sixth in the hammer throw Thursday, finished seventh in the shot put (43-01.00).
On the men's side, junior Jason Crisman finished second in the shot put with a throw of 53-06.25. Southern Utah's Hector Perez won the event (54-01.75) and junior Brayden Sherrick placed sixth with a season-best throw of 47-09.00.
Freshman Michael Crabtree cleared a height of 6-05.00 in the men's high jump and placed third overall. Crabtree entered the championships as the No. 5 seed after a personal best performance at Wisconsin's Twilight Invitational (6-09.00).    Â
In the men's long jump, sophomore Zach Glasebrook set a personal best in a fifth place finish. His leap of 23-04.50 easily beats his previous personal best of 22-05.00, which was The Summit League's 11th farthest performance entering the championships.  Â
Several Fighting Leathernecks qualified for the finals of their respective events on Saturday. In the men's events, junior Jeffrey Liles placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (55.20), sophomore Davin Dollison placed ninth in the 200-meter dash (22.73) and senior Aaron Russo finished 12th in the 800-meter run (2:00.06).
Sophomore Chelsea Lynes and senior Julie Dietsch both qualified for Saturday's women's 800-meter run finals. Lynes placed fifth with a time of 2:19.20 while Dietsch set a season best in a eighth place finish (2:21.06).
Senior Nikki Klier entered the championships as the No. 1 seed in the women's 400-meter dash and qualified for the finals with a seventh place finish (58.67). Meanwhile junior Miranda Brockman placed seventh and qualified for the women's 400-meter hurdles finals with a time of 1:07.93.
The Outdoor Summit League Championships conclude Saturday (May 14) at the Sanford Health Sports Complex's Lillibridge Track on the campus of South Dakota State University. The field events start with the women's discus throw at 10 a.m. while the events on the track start at 12:20 p.m. with the finals of the women's 4x100-meter relay.
