MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois University Fighting Leathernecks open their 2011 home football schedule this Saturday (Sept. 10) at Hanson Field. Kickoff against Jacksonville is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The game also marks the debut of the Matrix Turf installed at Hanson Field over the summer, and on-going track and field renovations that are currently taking place on the north end of the facility. The Western Illinois University Student Government Association is the Gameday Sponsor and will be honored between the first and second quarters for their assistance in funding to make the Matrix Turf at Hanson a reality.
The University will open the 'Gameday Tailgate' parking lots Saturday morning and official tailgating activities start five hours prior to kickoff (10 a.m. this Saturday). Tailgating will be allowed up to 30 minutes upon completion of the game.
Saturday's home opener also marks the inaugural 'Gameday at The Q' sponsored by the Western Illinois University Housing and Dining Services.
In 2011, there will be no charge for the general public and Western Illinois University students to tailgate in the Q Lot, located on the north end of Hanson Field. Tailgate locations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
For reserved season-long tailgate spaces fans can join the Leatherneck Club for as little as $100. (Lot N - the Pit - located in the south parking lot of Hanson Field and also the southwest corner of Q Lot).
Special guest parking and Gameday activities will also take place inside Lot N (the Pit). Fans with questions on how to join the Leatherneck Club can call Assistant Athletics Director Sean McDonough at (309) 298-2602.
Similar to previous years, no kegs or glass containers are allowed in either Gameday Tailgate area, and 21 is the legal age to consume alcohol. Garbage receptacles will be located throughout the tailgate areas, and fans are asked to police and clean their location.
"We are trying to create an exciting traditional Division I college football game day atmosphere for our fans, students and student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. "We encourage and expect responsibility while visiting our campus for game days. We've been afforded, with the support and direction of the University, the opportunity to make our game day experience at Western similar to our peer institutions. We hope all recognize this opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere, throw bags, grill some great food, go into the stadium and cheer for the Fighting Leathernecks. We want our fans to have a memorable experience at Hanson Field this Saturday, and keep coming back throughout the 2011 season."
Following the game and performance by the Marching Leathernecks, fans are welcome on the field to tour the Matrix Turf surface.
