UMKC Defeats Leathernecks in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Western Illinois (6-5, 0-2) was aiming to rebound after its loss at South Dakota on Friday to open the Summit League schedule. However, UMKC (4-5-3, 2-0) was able to defend its home pitch with a 2-1 victory.

Miranda Graham netted her third goal of the season in the sixth minute to give Western an early lead over the Kangaroos.

In the 40th minute, UMKC tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Ashley Gann. Gann came into the afternoon leading the Kangaroos with 31 total shots this season.

After 45 minutes of action the score was knotted at 1-1 and the Leathernecks held the shot advantage 5-2 and the shots on goal advantage 4-1.

UMKC took the lead with a Taylor Bare goal in the 46th minute as she was assisted by Gann.

Trisha Quinn had a shot attempt go wide at 89:47 to give the Kangaroos the win.

Victoria Kappel made one save in her 90 minutes in net.

Western outshot UMKC 11-8 for the match and 6-3 in shots on goal.

The Purple & Gold will return to MacKenzie Alumni Field for two Summit League games next weekend. Western will battle with South Dakota State on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and North Dakota State at noon on Sunday.
