Western Illinois volleyball senior Cait Egan has been named the Papa John's Scholar-Athlete of the Week for her performance on the court and in the classroom.
Egan had 32 kills over 10 sets last week to become the ninth member of the 1,000 Kills Club. She needed just six kills against DePaul Tuesday night (Oct. 18) inside Western Hall and put down 10 kills on 28 attempts in a 3-0 victory over the Blue Demons. Egan collected her sixth kill in the second set when she put Western Illinois up 8-6 off a set by sophomore Sarah Fetter.
"It is a great accomplishment for her," said Western Illinois head coach Kym McKay about Egan's 1,000th career kill. "She has achieved something that very few players accomplish. It is a fantastic and prestigious honor at any institution."
Egan is the fourth player under McKay to enter the exclusive club along with Ashley Baker, Amy Sauerwein and Monique Houston. Egan, who now owns 1,026 career kills, needs 13 more kills this season to move past Western Illinois Hall of Famer Diane Ellefritz (1987-91) into eighth place on the program's all-time list.
Egan also collected six total blocks last week and now owns 339 career total blocks, which ranks fourth best in program history. Against Oral Roberts on Thursday (Oct. 20), Egan tied a career-high with seven digs.
In the classroom, Egan is pursuing a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and boasts a 3.66 cumulative GPA. She is a three-time member of the Summit League Fall Academic All-League Team and was named to the 2010-11 Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.
