MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's soccer held its annual awards banquet on Sunday evening. Six individual honor were handed out during the event including MVP and Newcomer of the Year.
Amber Davis was name Team MVP after she led the team with four goals while playing multiple positions during the 2011 season. Davis also collected a game-winning goal at Southern Utah. She was also named Forward of the Year.
Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Kappel collected Newcomer of the Year honors after starting all but one game between the pipes for the Purple & Gold. Kappel collected four shutouts and seven victories in her first season as a Leatherneck. She made 87 saves for a .702 save percentage. In her first start, Kappel shutout Mississippi Valley State in Western's season opener.
Senior captain Lauren DeWolf was named the Defender of the Year as she anchored the Leathernecks' back line with her poise and leadership while playing in every match this season.
Katie Condon scored two goals in 2011 including a game-winner at Drake and was named Midfielder of the Year. The junior started all 19 games for Head Coach Tony Guinn's squad.
Jordan Spaciel followed her 2010 season, which she was named to the Summit League All-Freshman Team with two goals and one assist in 2011. Spacial collected a game-winning goal at Mississippi Valley State in the first game of the season and earned the team's Hustle Award.
"Overall it was a wonderful evening," said assistant coach Mariana Sanchez. "The athletes that received awards definitely deserved them and will continue to be great role models to their teammates as the school year goes on. The team shared stories both funny and emotional that we as coaches miss out on and you really realize how important togetherness is to a team."
