PRIMM, Nev. - Western Illinois men's golf completed match play at Primm Valley Golf Course on Saturday evening. The Leathernecks used the event to shake off any rust before Monday's Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah as well as a preview of the Summit League Championship course. The results are unofficial and will not count towards season or career averages.
Western and Oral Roberts tied at 7.5 points during its match while the Leathernecks defeated Boise State 8 to 7.
Kurt Slattery led the way for the Purple & Gold with a 71 (35/36) for his round of 18 and picked up six total points in his matches. Tim Harwood finished with a 73 (35/38) and contributed a .5 point to the cause. Andrew Godfrey carded a 75 (40/35) and collected 2.5 points for his squad. Ben Kilborn also fired a round of 75 (36/39) and added four points to the match play competition. Dan Bidle was the fifth and final Leatherneck competing in the match and shot a 77 (36/41) and brought home 2.5 points.
"It was really windy today but I am really proud of how out guys played coming out of the gates to start this spring," said head coach Mel Blasi. "It was a good chance to play a different format, which was fun while also playing on the conference course. We are excited about how we are playing because we are getting better and getting closer to being able to compete at the top of the league."
The men's will shift to the Mountain Time Zone with competition at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah in St. George, Utah beginning on Feb. 13.
Last spring at the Pat Hicks Invite, Western finished 11th out of 12 teams while Godfrey tied for 15th with a two-round score of 145 (71/74).
