Nathaniel Marshall Sets Personal Best at Monmouth College


MONMOUTH, Ill. – Sophomore Nathaniel Marshall's personal best in the hammer throw highlighted a busy Saturday (May 5) for Western Illinois track and field. Mostly track athletes competed at the Wisconsin Open while the throws team participated in Monmouth College's Fighting Scots Invitational.

FIGHTING SCOTS INVITATIONAL 

Marshall, a native of Bushnell, Ill., won the men's hammer throw with a personal best effort of 192-02, which ranks third in program history and second in The Summit League. Senior Paul Hames placed second in the event (178-11) and also won the men's discus throw (157-06).

Senior Brayden Sherrick placed third in the men's shot put (49-01.00) and fifth in the discus throw (147-04). Junior Tyler Lippert set a personal best (169-09) while placing third in the hammer throw.

Junior Dana LaRue won the women's shot put with a season-best effort of 48-02.00, which ranks third in The Summit League. Senior Lizzy Jones placed second in the discus throw (137-03) and fifth in the hammer throw (163-09). With a toss of 167-09, senior Jessica Ortega finished third in the women's hammer throw.

WISCONSIN OPEN 

Senior Nichole Manning, Western Illinois' record holder in the pole vault, won the event Saturday by clearing a season-best height of 12-03.50, which ranks seventh in The Summit League. With a leap of 38-04.25, freshman Megan McGlone won her second straight women's triple jump competition.

Senior Jordan Liles set a personal best in the 200-meter dash (22.78) and won his fourth javelin throw event of the season (173-05). His brother, Jeffrey Liles, placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.53.

Sophomore Kirsten Bryant placed third in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.18, which ranks eighth fastest in the conference. By clearing a height of 5-03.25, junior Talisa Watson finished third in the women's high jump. In the women's javelin throw, senior Megan Wyffels placed fourth with a toss of 104-11 while junior Danielle Gunn finished fifth in the women's long jump (16-07.00).

Freshman Mark Holt placed second in the men's 5,000-meter run (15:31.63) and sophomore Zach Glasebrook finished fourth in the men's long jump (21-06.25). Other personal bests include sophomore Zach Wiedeman (1,500-meter run - 3:57.38) and freshman Lydia Smith (1,500-meter run - 4:46.46).

Western Illinois is back in action when the Fighting Leathernecks travel to Fargo, N.D. for the 2012 Summit League Outdoor Championships. The three-day event, hosted by North Dakota State, begins Thursday (May 10) at the Ellig Sports Complex.
