MACOMB, Ill. – College
Sports Madness announced its Preseason All-Summit League Teams on Monday and
several Western Illinois men's soccer team members were recognized.
Dr. Eric Johnson, the reigning Summit League Coach of the
Year earned Preseason Coach of the Year honors, and the reigning Defensive
Player of the Year, junior Charlie Bales, was named the Preseason Defensive
Player of the Year.
Bales was joined on the First Team by seniors Husref Jupic
and Nathan Bruinsma.
Additionally, sophomore Diego Gonzalez was recognized as a
Second Team All-League honoree.
Johnson is the Summit League's all-time winningest coach
with 129 career wins and has guided the Fighting Leathernecks to five
conference titles in the past eight years.
Bales was a First Team all-leaguer last year, finishing the
season with six points on two goals and two assists, and was also named MVP of
the Summit League Tournament.
Bruinsma led the squad with 12 points on five goals and two
assists, also earning Second Team All-Summit League kudos as a forward.
Jupic, a midfielder, totaled nine points on three goals and
three assists in 19 matches for Western to earn Second Team All-Conference
honors, as well.
Gonzalez spent his freshman season as a sparkplug off the
bench, scoring three game-winning goals in his 16 games played at midfield.
