Leatherneck Women's Soccer Stretches Win Streak to Three

ITA BENNA, Miss. - Western Illinois women's soccer (3-1-0) extended its win streak to three with a 1-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State (0-3-0) on Sunday (September 2) afternoon.

In her first start of the 2012 season, sophomore forward Sarah Hall netted the lone goal of the match in the 62nd minute, giving her a team high three on the year. Sloane Levin picked up the assist on the play, her first of the season.

The Leathernecks outshot the Devilettes 23 to three overall and 13 to three on goal. Mississippi Valley State's keeper Shelby Willcocks had four saves in the first period and eight in the second for a total of 12 in the contest.

Western keeper Laura Atkinson had three saves on the match and recorded her first shutout victory in net.

Hall led the squad with five shots on goal and was followed by Abby Davis with three. The rest were spread throughout the team with Chrissy Campbell, Katie Condon, Kellie Julius, Tiara Herron and Skyler Jessop each firing one apiece.

"We played well enough to win, but did not put in a full 90 in terms of the performance," head coach Ted Flogaites said. "That must change. However, I thought we were exceptional in the second half and did not concede a single shot from the run of play. We created  numerous chances, but lacked the killer instinct inside the box, but to be fair their keeper played in tremendous fashion. It is our second clean sheet, and we are learning about ourselves with each performance. Getting a result on the road is positive, but full credit to the squad for dealing with the heat and playing wonderfully in the second half."

Western Illinois returns to the pitch on Monday (September 3) at Jackson State. The match, which was originally scheduled for Friday (August 31) and was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac, is slated to begin at 11 a.m. in Jackson, Miss. Livestats are not available for the competition.
