DES MOINES, Iowa - Western Illinois women's soccer (5-1-0) saw its streak to five matches with a 2-1 victory over the Vikings of Grand View (2-3-0) on Friday (September 7). In the match, two Leathernecks notched their first goals of the 2012 season.
With a little more than 20 seconds left in the opening half of the match, Amber Davis set up classmate Kayse Flostrand for her first goal of the 2012 season.
The Bees sent in the equalizing goal in the 56th minute of the match challenging the Leathernecks. The contest remained knotted until the 80th minute when a Katie Condon to Amy Bennett pass resulted in a game-winning goal. It was Bennett's first goal of the season.
Western keeper Victoria Kappel recorded her second win of the season notching one save and one goal in her 90-minute effort.
"Thrilling win," head coach Ted Flogaites said. "Amy Bennett took the match winner brilliantly and it was a well deserved goal. Nifty flick on by Katie Condon to put her through. Kayse Flostrand was brave in the box to put us in front earlier in the match, and I am happy for her. That was a quality Grand View team, and they are well coached and well prepared. Full credit to them. Their team spirit is exceptional. I feel like we were rewarded for the sustained pressure we created for the majority of the match, and Victoria Kappel made a phenomenal save in the first half to keep the score deadlocked. Our movement in and around the final third is improving, but we still need to be far more deadly in the box. It's a win on the road against a quality opponent, and it's futbol at night, you can't ask for much more than that. It is a privilege to be able to watch us improve from match to match, session to session. I am very proud of this team."
The Fighting Leathernecks return to the pitch on Sunday (September 9) at St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
