MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois men's
tennis team completed day two of the 8th annual Art Peterson Invitational. The
tournament wrapped up with singles play on Saturday (Sept. 8).
The Leathernecks saw three winners in singles play: Bradley
Holt in the No. 3 draw, Mitch Granger in the No. 5 draw and Brandon Meeker in
the No. 9 draw.
"We had nine flights of singles and four flights
of doubles. We won three of the flights in singles." Said third year head
coach Chris Kane. "We had three runners up...I think our ability rose during
singles. It was just getting out there and battling the elements and your
opponent. I think our guys played pretty well in singles."
Bradley Holt won in the No. 3 draw
final in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. This was the first tournament for the
true-freshman out of Homewood, Ill. "He was just knocking the cover off the ball," said head
coach Chris Kane. "I
was really pleased with the way he played."
Mitch Granger, who missed all of
last season with an injury, took home No. 5 singles with an impressive
comeback. "He was down in the third set tiebreaker 8-5, and won five points in a row
to win the match at number five singles," continued head coach Chris Kane.
Sophomore Brandon Meeker won at No. 9 singles 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Christoph Haertel made it to the finals in the No.
1 draw before falling 6-4, 6-3, Tim Worley made it to the finals in the No. 6
draw before falling 6-0, 6-2 and Brett Furmanski made the finals of the No. 7
draw before falling 6-0, 6-4.
Western will be in action again on September 28 and 29 as
they travel to Valparaiso, Ind. for the Valparaiso Invitational.
