Leatherneck Women's Soccer Returns Home for Conference Opening Play

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's soccer (7-2-0) returns to its home pitch, John MacKenzie Alumni Field, for conference opening play against Kansas City (3-5-3) on Friday (September 28) and South Dakota (1-7-2) on Saturday (September 30) following a month long road swing.

The Fighting Leathernecks had last weekend off following a 1-1 weekend. The squad fell 1-0 to the Bears of Missouri State on Friday (September 14), halting its six-match win streak. Keeper Victoria Kappel tallied five saves in the match.

On Sunday (September 16), Western recorded a 3-1 come-behind win over North Dakota. UND scored in the second minute of the match for an early lead, and the Leathernecks trailed for the remainder of the first half. In the 72nd minute, Skyler Jessop netted the equalizing goal and with less than seven minutes of play in the contest, Kristin Becker notched the game-winning goal off of a corner kick. Sarah Hall added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to round out scoring, her fourth of the season.

PRESEASON POLL: The Leathernecks were picked to finish tied for sixth along with IUPUI in the 2012 Summit League Women's Soccer Preseason Poll. Western Illinois tallied 22 points in the all Summit League coach vote. Oakland, last year's Summit League Tournament Champion, was picked to finish first with 61 points and regular season champions South Dakota State took second with 59 points.
