MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois softball hosted its first-ever alumni weekend in school history last Saturday and Sunday (October 6-7). The theme for the event was "Honor THE Tradition".
A large group of alums returned to Macomb for the festivities which began at 11 a.m. on Saturday with a pregame meal from Jimmy John's followed by a warmup and game between the current team and the alumni. Following the game, which the alumni won 11-3, a social was held at Buffalo Wild Wings.
The weekend concluded with a double header at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium against Kirkwood Community College on Sunday. The Leathernecks won both games by margins of 5-2 and 8-6.
"It was really great to have the alumni that could make it come back and take part in the weekend," head coach and Western alum Holly Van Vlymen said. "I don't think we were as rusty as we thought we would be so that was a lot of fun. It was good to see the current team spend some time with the alums and make connections with them. I look forward to putting this event on again next September."
