MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois softball battled for its final two victories of the fall season over Kirkwood Community College on Sunday (October 7). The Leathernecks won by margins of 5-2 and 8-6.

Starting pitcher Hailey Bickford recorded the win in the circle tossing five shutout innings and tallying seven strikeouts in her appearance, and a two-run homerun off the bat of Alex Pflieger highlighted the offensive attack.

In game two, Western was able to come out on top of the back and forth battle. Lia Romeo hit a two-run blast over the left field fence to give the Leathernecks a 2-0 advantage in the third inning.

Kirkwood answered with five runs in the fifth, but the Western offense fired back scoring five runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The teams scored one run apiece in the sixth inning to give the contest its final 8-6 result. Kacyee Hart picked up the win in the circle.

Prior to the double header, Western Illinois head coach Holly Van Vlymen presented Sammy Marshall with a plaque recognizing her 2012 NCAA Stolen Base statistical championship. The Naperville, Ill. native swiped a school and Summit League record 45 bags last season averaging 1.18 steals per game. She is just the fourth softball student-athlete in the Summit League to win a statistical title and the first to do so since 2006.
