MACOMB, Ill. - The Fort Wayne volleyball team, who entered the weekend atop The Summit League standings, defeated the Western Illinois volleyball squad 3-0 Friday evening (Nov. 9) inside Brophy Hall.
The Leathernecks (11-16, 4-11) gained an early lead in set one, but the Mastodons (23-5, 12-3) battled back, and earned a 26-24 set one win. Western again fought hard in a tight second set, but fell short 25-23, before IPFW finished things off in the third set with a 25-19 victory.
"I'm proud of our girls and the effort we put forth tonight, said head coach April Hall. "IPFW is a great team and even though we didn't come out with a win, we took several strides forward and improved as a team. We forgot about the pressure and focused on getting better tonight; and that we did. The close of season has come too soon for us as we have so much more to prove, but I thoroughly believe that this group has set the foundation and paved the way for bigger and better things to come for WIU Volleyball."
Sarah Fetter finished the match with 41 assists, while also tying for the team lead in digs with nine. Fournier also dug nine Mastodon attacks. Bridget Murphy and Smith were also able to contribute in the back row, digging seven and five balls, respectively.
For IPFW, Emily Spencer and Haley Emenhiser led the way, killing 16 attempts each. Their setter, Megan Steenhuysen, recorded a game-high 42 assists, and while Tessa McGill had 17 digs.
The Leathernecks will conclude their 2012 season tomorrow night at home versus Oakland at 7 p.m. inside Brophy Hall. The volleyball program will recognize their two seniors prior to the match.
