Two School Records Broken In Track & Field Weekend Meets

AMES, Iowa & MONMOUTH, Ill. - Michael Castel and Glenn Powell both broke school records as Western Illinois track & field competed at the Iowa State Classic and Fighting Scot Invitational this weekend.

Castel shattered a 24-year-old record in the 5,000-meter run, breaking Bill Kitchell's record of 14:51.14 by finishing in 14:40.24, besting the previous mark by more than 10 seconds.

He won the non-seeded event over a field of 33, and finished seventh out of 47 total, including a seeded race Castel didn't compete in.

Powell once again broke his own record in the 60-meter hurdles, topping his previous mark of 8.23 by finishing in 8.18.

Additionally, Dana LaRue set a new career best in the weight throw with a toss of 61-09.50, moving her into third in program history.

She also won the non-seeded flight over the field of 23, finishing fourth of 32 in total.

LaRue also competed in the seeded shot put and finished seventh out of 28 by throwing 49-09.25.

At Monmouth, Myelle Vann entered the program record books by finishing the 200-meter dash in 25.66, eighth-best in program history.

The Leathernecks will return to competition on Friday as they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the University of Iowa Invitational.
