#WIU13n13: Luke Earning 'Newcomer of the Year' Award is #12


Redshirt-freshman Ashley Luke capped off an impressive 2012-13 season by receiving The Summit League's 'Newcomer of the Year' award, marking the third straight year a Fighting Leatherneck has received the honor.

Luke, who was awaiting word from the NCAA on whether she would be eligible to play this season after transferring from Green Bay, and the coaching staff received official word prior to the season opener she could play immediately. She joined Sadie Webb (2011) and Saule Kontautaite (2012) as Leathernecks who received the Summit League honor.

Luke also was voted Second Team All-Summit League after totaling 12.9 points per game (ninth-most in the Summit) and 8.0 rebounds per game (second-most) during conference action.

She also finished fourth in the conference in blocks per game (1.1) and field goal percentage (49.7 percent).

In the last five games of the season, Luke totaled four double-doubles, including a 24-point, 10-rebound effort in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinal loss, a 106-101 double-overtime thriller against Fort Wayne.

Luke helped the Leathernecks to a 14-16 overall record, the most wins for the program since also recording 14 in 2007-08.
