MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois student-athletes continued their success in the classroom in the spring 2012 semester posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.015, again outscoring the Western Illinois student body's spring GPA of 2.955. Student-athletes have now surpassed a semester cumulative 3.0 GPA for the sixth time in the last seven semesters.

More than half of the Fighting Leathernecks earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher (198-of-380, 52.11 percent) and 35 Leathernecks turned in a perfect 4.0. Eighty-six earned semester honors (22.63 percent) which requires a minimum GPA of 3.60.

Women's cross country led the way for women's athletic teams earning a record-high semester GPA of 3.711, trumping the previous record of 3.710 set by volleyball in Spring 2010. Finishing close behind were volleyball (3.667) and soccer (3.64). Other women's teams posting a 3.0 or higher GPA were: golf (3.472), track and field (3.314), swimming and diving (3.28) and tennis (3.026).

The men's team with the highest GPA was cross country which posted a semester mark of 3.59. Men's golf (3.171) and swimming and diving (3.067) also finished above the 3.0 mark.

"We are proud to highlight the academic accomplishments of the student-athletes this spring and their dedication to performing at a high level, not just on the competition field but also in the classroom," Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine said. "They worked to earn a combined spring semester grade point average of 3.015 outperforming the Western Illinois student body and 198 of our student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher with 35 posting a perfect 4.0. Our academic performances over the past several semesters is a direct reflection on our coaches recruiting student-athletes who will succeed academically and athletically."
