ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League announced that 103 Fighting Leathernecks were named to the 2011-12 Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence on Thursday (June 21).
To qualify for the honor, student-athletes needed to have a minimum career grade point average of 3.0, be a sophomore and completed a full year at the nominating institution. True freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and first year transfers were ineligible for the award.
Leatherneck volleyball and women's cross country each saw 100 percent of their eligible student-athletes meet the aforementioned criteria and receive The Summit League's recognition.
"Having 103 student-athletes named to The Summit League's Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence is a great honor for Western Illinois athletics and again affirms our commitment to the University's Academic Excellence Core Value," Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine said. "We are particularly pleased that women's cross country and volleyball had 100 percent of qualified student-athletes make the list."
Men's track and field had a Western Illinois sports program high 17 student-athletes recognized and was followed by men's soccer with seven, men's golf with six, baseball with five, men's cross country with four and men's swimming and diving with two.
Soccer had the highest showing with 16 for the women and was followed by track and field with 13, softball and volleyball with eight apiece, basketball and swimming and diving with five each, golf with four and cross country with three.
