MACOMB, Ill. - Several Fighting Leatherneck golfers are competing in local action this summer, some of which are finding success led by Emily Brink on the women's side and Peter McKinzie on the men's.

For the men's team, sophomore Peter McKenzie captured the LP Collegiate Golf Championship on June 20 this year at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course at Western Illinois University. McKinzie carded rounds of 74-74-148 to finish two strokes ahead of Illinois State's Josh Edison and three strokes ahead of teammate sophomore Nate Davis, who finished at 75-76-151.

In other action, the Leathernecks placed three in the top-six at the Country Youth Classic in Normal Illinois. McKenzie shot a final round 71 to go with his opening 75 to finish two strokes behind winner George Tate. Davis tied for third after rounds of 71-76-147 and sophomore Tyler Thorman finished in sixth alone with scores of 76-72-148. All three Leathernecks will be on the roster this fall for Western.

Former Leathernecks Tim Harwood, Kurt Slattery, Jared Steger and Tim Streng qualified for the Illinois Open. The Illinois Open will be played at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill. on July 16-18.

On the women's side, freshman Kristi Tschudin, freshman Jessica Knepp and senior Emily Brink all played well for us in the Country Youth Classic in Bloomington, Ill. Tschudin carded a 74-78--152 and finished fifth, Knepp finished ninth with a score of 78-80--158, while Brink also tallied a score of  158 (79, 79) and finished 10th.

Knepp and Tschudin also qualified for the Championship flight in the Illinois State Amateur. In match play, Kristi beat Renee Solberg, Megan Furtney and incoming NIU player Connie Ellet, before losing to eventual champion who will attend Northwestern in the fall Elizabeth Szokol.

Brink finished second in the Quincy Women's City Golf Championships, carding a 151 (73, 78), five strokes short of first-place.

Tschudin was also recently named the recipient of the Cathy Early Scholarship.

2012 Fall Schedules

Both golf programs are set to begin their fall schedules in early September.

The men's squad will once again begin their season at the Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational (September 10), where the team will look to improve on its seventh place finish.

Senior Ben Kilborn (Bloomington, Ill./University) looks to repeat his top-15 performance at the Illinois State Invitational (September 22), before the team heads to the Kansas State Invitational (October 1).

The Leathernecks will then return to the DePaul Invitational on October 6, where senior Konrad Deka (Chicago, Ill/Leyden) fired a career-best round of 69 last fall, before the men round out their fall schedule with a trip to the UMKC Invitational (October 15).

The women's team opens its season with a return to the Illinois State Redbird Invitational (September 8) before traveling to the Ball State Redbird Classic (September 22), where junior Kristi Tschudin (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) and sophomore Ashley Jeffers (West Chester, Ill./Lakota West) finished tied for seventh.

After playing in the Northern Illinois Invitational (September 30), the women's squad will return home to play host to the WIU Autumn Invitational (October 14) to end the fall season.
