6. Leatherneck Baseball knocks off No. 8 ranked Georgia
- Nick Smith looks on in the midst of his first-ever collegiate victory.
After losing two close games to the eighth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in the first two games of the series, freshman right-hander Nick Smith and the Leathernecks upset UGA 7-4 to capture the finale.
Smith allowed only two earned runs on six hits in 7.2 innings, striking out seven. Offensively, Ryan Cowhey had two hits, two walks, two runs scored and four stolen bases. Western rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score four times in the second inning and eventually led 7-2. Georgia threatened in its half of the eighth scoring twice, but Western closed the door.
It was the program's first win over a ranked program since March 2009.
