MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois softball 2012-13 freshman class was busy on the diamond racking up high school softball honors and summer team accolades in preparation for their collegiate careers.
Tierney Bottino of LaGrange, Ill. earned All-Conference honors and was named to the Chicago Sun Times Top 100 Softball Players list in her final season at Lockport Township. She also served as team captain and was awarded All-Area Honorable Mention honors after posting a batting average of .381.
Chicago, Ill. native, Kacyee Hart, helped guide Lincoln-Way East to a Conference Championship title and joined Bottino on the Chicago Sun Times Top 100 Softball players list. The right-handed hurler played her way to All-Conference honors and was also named to the Century 21 All-Area team.
Karissa Kouchis of Orland Park, Ill. collected her fourth varsity letter in softball and was an All-Conference selection. Her teammates and coaches awarded her the Leadership and Excellence award after she posted a .339 batting average and led the team in stolen bases with 18. She was also the recipient of the Joe Devine Award and the Senior Physical Education Award by the Physical Education faculty at Sandburg High School.
The Fighting Leathernecks will appear for the first time in Leatherneck uniforms at Mary Ellen McKee stadium in a fall double header on Sunday, September 23 against Sauk Valley Community College. The games are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
