INDIANAPOLIS - Despite taking more shots on goal, Western Illinois fell to IUPUI, 3-0, in a Summit League match at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday night.

The Leathernecks fall to 3-8-3 overall and 1-2-2 in The Summit League, while the Jaguars improve to 6-8-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Western Illinois took nine shots on goal compared to seven for IUPUI, but all nine were saved by IUPUI keeper Eduardo Cortes, who ranks third in the nation in saves.

Freshman Erick Bloom led the squad with three shots, all on goal, while two of junior Charlie Bales' three shots were also on target.

The Jaguars first struck in the closing minutes of the first half, when Alejandro Martignon assisted a Ryan Robinson goal to give IUPUI a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the 60th minute, Emile Garcia connected on a shot from short-range to take a 2-0 lead, assisted by Clint Hoffar.

Robinson connected with Martignon for the second time of the night in the 80th minute to push the margin to 3-0.

Junior keeper Yves Dietrich made four saves in the loss.

Each team took four corner kicks, while IUPUI took more shots (16-14) and committed more fouls (26-12).

Western Illinois will return home to close the regular season with four straight home games, beginning with a nonconference contest against Bradley on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
