MACOMB, Ill. - Both of the men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Rochester, Michigan on the campus of Oakland University for the culmination of the 2012 season at the Summit League Championships.
THE BREAKDOWN
What: 2012 Cross Country Summit League Championships
When: Saturday, October 27, 2012
Where: Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan
Events: Women's 6K at 10 A.M. and Men's 8K at 11 A.M.
The Leathernecks this season have ran in their own meet to open up at the Early Bird Invite (Aug. 31), traveled to Edwardsville on the campus of SIU-E for their Cross Country Challenge (Sept. 14), South Bend, Indiana at prestigious Notre Dame University, and most recently to Peoria, Illinois for the Bradley Classic.
As the season has gone along a number of runners for Western have achieved personal records. Most notably, Michael Castel and Alycia Thurston, who both broke school records at the Bradley Classic in the 8K and 6K, respectively.
Head coach David Beauchem knows the importance of the regular season, and how it prepares runners for conference.
"We have been able to train hard and stay healthy. This is the challenge to every season," said coach Beauchem. "Both teams came to campus in August with racing experience, being mostly Sophomores and Juniors, but not having the experience of success. We have had the success during the season. Now we have to show it in the races that count the most - the post-season."
The Leathernecks have been able to build up to this moment in the season and coach Beauchem believes in what he sees day in and day out.
"I expect us, person to person, to have the best race of the season at the Summit League Championship. We are fit and we are healthy. I expect our race performance to show it," said coach. "We should be right with all of them. Alycia, Chelsea Lynes, and Lydia Smith should all have a great shot at All-Summit League. The Men should be racing up front and our depth should prove to make us very competitive with the rest of the League."
