The Game is On... Leathernecks Face Bradley Friday Night

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's basketball is set to challenge Bradley this Friday (Dec. 21) at 7 p.m. in Western Hall. The Leathernecks (5-5) will put their 4-0 home court record on the line against the Braves (6-4).

Last time on the court, Western recorded a 70-68 victory over Eastern Illinois, a squad that defeated the Leathernecks last season by 33 points. Charnelle Reed paced the team offensively scoring 16, while Saule Kontautaite and Ashley Luke added 15 apiece. Luke's 15 points marked a career- and season-high. Joining the three in double figures was Michele Salvatori who netted 10 in the contest.

Three Leathernecks pulled down a team-high four rebounds, Michelle Maher, Reed and Rebecca Henricson. Henricson also tallied a team-high four assists. The win marked Western's first over Eastern since Dec. 7, 2000.

LAST TIME OUT: The Fighting Leatherneck women’s basketball team defeated in-state rival Eastern Illinois 70-68 on Monday (Dec. 17), a team that beat Western by a 33 point margin during in the 2011-12 season... Charnelle Reed led the offensive attack scoring 16 points, followed by Saule Kontautaite and Ashley Luke who contributed 15 apiece... Michele Salvatori also reached double figures with 10 points... Michelle Maher, Rebecca Henricson and Reed paced the squad in rebounds, pulling down four each... Henricson dished out a team-high four assists... The victory marked Western’s first win over Eastern since Dec. 7, 2000.

SCOUTING THE BRAVES: Bradley, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, brings an overall record of 6-4 into Friday’s matchup with the Leathernecks... Shronda Butts and Catie O’Leary lead the Braves in scoring netting 133 (13.3 ppg) and 132 (ppg) points, respectively... O’Leary paces the squad in rebounds with 79 (7.9 rpg)... Butts also leads the team in assists with 39 (3.9 apg)... The Bradley roster consists of four freshmen, two sophomores, four juniors and two seniors... Head coach Michael Brooks is in the middle of his first season at the helm of the program after spending the season prior serving as an assistant coach on the staff.

SUMMIT LEAGUE STATS: Western Illinois leads The Summit League in 3-point FG made (75), assists per game (15.2) and blocked shots per game (4.3), second in steals per game (8.8), and fourth in points scored per game (63.4)... The Leathernecks are third in points allowed per game (60.5) while forcing the second-most turnovers per game (18.2).

Charnelle Reed ranks first in 3-point percentage (50.0) and 10th in field goal percentage (43.3)... Saule Kontautaite is third in 3-pointers made per game (2.1) and sixth in points per game (14.6) and field goals per game (5.2)... Rebecca Henricson is sixth in steals (19), eighth in assists (32) and ninth in assist to turnover ratio (1.4)... Karis Phillips is second with an assist to turnover ratio of 3.2... Rachel Evans and Ashley Luke are tied for fifth in blocks recording 10 apiece.

According to the latest national statistics (through games of
Dec. 16), Western ranks 20th in the country averaging 7.6 3-point field goals per game... Western stands 61st in assists per game (15.0), 56th in blocked shots per game (4.7) and 30th overall averaging just 13.7 personal fouls per game.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: The Leathernecks have protected Waste Management Court in Macomb going 4-0 at home thus far this season... The home stand includes a 85-35 win over Clarke, a 69-55 victory over Valparaiso, a 70-53 win against William Woods and most recently a 70-68 win over Eastern Illinois.
