Western Illinois Swimming & Diving Resumes Action with Triangular Meet

MACOMB, Ill. - Fighting Leatherneck swimming and diving returns to the pool on Saturday (Feb. 2) in a triangular meet against Monmouth, Valparaiso and Augustana. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill.

In its last competition at Saint Louis, Western fell by scores of 165-113 (men) and 178-84 (women). The squad posted a total of 19 top two finishes and five first place finishes.

Pacing the men's team with three top finishes in the 1000 free (10:07.03), 500 free (4:56.76) and 400 IM (4:19.23) was Matt Abercrombie. Also contributing first place finishes were Jacob Shain in the 200 fly (2:01.04) and Doug Ogilvie in one-meter diving (305.75).

Megan Popp led the way for the women's team recording two runner-up finishes in the 1000 free (11:09.58) and the 500 free (5:27.77).

NOTES

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Meet host Monmouth, a member of the Midwest Conference, brings dual records of 2-3 (men) and 2-3 (women) into the contest... College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin member Augustana is 4-0 (men) and 3-1 (women) in dual meets this season... Valparaiso, a member of the Horizon League, is 0-7 (men) and 0-8 (women) in duals.

LAST TIME OUT: Western posted five first place finishes in competition at Saint Louis on Friday (Jan. 25)... Matt Abercrombie notched three of them in the 1000 free, 500 free and 400 IM... Also contributing top finishes were Jacob Shain in the 200 fly and Doug Ogilvie in one-meter diving... Despite their efforts, the Leathernecks lost to the Billikens 165-113 (men) and 178-84 (women).

LEADING LADY: Captain Julia Rassmussen is the lone Leatherneck to rank in the Summit League 'Top 10' for an event... Her one-meter six dive score of 235.65 is good for the fourth spot on the list.

RANKING MEN: Several men rank within the Summit League's 'Top 10' in their respective events... Matt Abercrombie is second in the 1650 free (16:24.23), eighth in the 1000 free (9:57.58), ninth in the 400 IM (4:15.44) and 10th in the 500 free (4:46.24)... Dylon Rykosky ranks 10th in the 200 fly (1:55.86) and the 200 IM (1:56.67)... Doug Ogilvie is second in one-meter six dives (314.85) and third in three-meter six dives (319.58)... Viktor Rusenas is 10th in one-meter six dives (245.70).

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: A total of four Leathernecks have been honored by the Summit League as Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week... Most recently, Doug Ogilvie earned his fourth career honor after sweeping one-meter and three-meter diving in consecutive weekend meets, setting a Brophy Hall Pool record in one-meter diving and qualifying for the NCAA Zones postseason diving meet... Sophomore Tyler Neaveill and freshman Megan Popp each earned their first Athlete of the Week nod for their performances against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday (Dec. 15)... Freshman Matt Abercrombie earned the honor on Oct. 6 after earning event victories in the 500 free (4:54.72) and the 200 IM (2:02.03) and placing runner-up in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.18.

QUALIFIER: Sophomore diver Doug Ogilvie earned the second trip of his collegiate career to the NCAA Zones postseason diving meet after posting a one-meter score of 315.53 on Jan. 18... To qualify a diver must score higher than 300.00 in the one-meter and/or 320.00 in the three-meter... The score was also a new Brophy Hall Pool record.

UP NEXT: The Fighting Leathernecks head to Iowa for its final meet of the regular season on Friday (Feb. 8)... Competition is slated to begin at 5 p.m.... The Summit League Championship, hosted by Oakland, begins on Feb. 20 and runs through Feb. 23.

CAPTAINS: Junior Jonathan Bond and senior Bart Pienkowski will be team captains for the men and a pair of juniors, Haley Brasile and Julia Rassmussen, were chosen to captain the women's team.

PRESEASON POLL: Western Illinois was predicted to finish last in the Summit League standings in the men's and women's preseason coaches' polls... Oakland, South Dakota State and IUPUI were chosen to finish as the top three for the men and the women.
