Leathernecks Fall to Red Wolves 14-6 in Series Finale

JONESBORO, Ark. - Western Illinois baseball fell to Arkansas State 14-6 in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24). The Leathernecks recorded eight hits in the contest, led by Travis Stafford and Manny Reyes who each had two.

Arkansas State would score the first six runs of the game. The Red Wolves scored two in the first inning and four more in the third inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.

The Leathernecks would storm back however, scoring six runs of their own to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning.

The Purple & Gold got their first three runs of the game in the fourth inning. Manny Reyes hit his second double of the series in the inning, scoring both Jake Moore and Steve Kedroski. Travis Stafford also crossed the plate in the inning after Zack Burling hit into a fielders choice.

Western picked up one run in the fifth inning after sophomore Jake Moore hit a home run over the right centerfield wall. The solo home run was the first for Moore at Western Illinois.

The final two runs of the game for Western came in the sixth inning. Manny Reyes and Neil DeCook each singled to lead off the inning. Reyes would score on an RBI groundout by Nate Ewing, while DeCook scored on an RBI single by Dan Dispensa.

The Red Wolves scored eight runs in the final three innings of the contest to seal the victory. Logan Uxa led the charge for Arkansas State, hitting a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Uxa finished the game with three hits and three RBI for the Red Wolves.

Freshman Alex Doty (0-1) was charged with the loss for Western Illinois. Doty threw 1 2/3 innings while allowing one hit and giving up one run. In total, the Leathernecks used seven pitchers in the game.

Seth McWilliams got the win for Arkansas State. McWilliams threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out four.

The Leathernecks will conclude their road trip to the state of Arkansas next weekend against Arkansas-Little Rock. The three-game set begins Friday (Mar. 1) and goes through Sunday (Mar. 3).
