"We are very excited about making it to a postseason tournament for the second consecutive season in the 2013 College Basketball Invitational," said head coach Jim Molinari. "We've had a great year so far, earning the most wins in our program's NCAA Division I history and earning a share of the Summit League regular season championship. Our players earned the right to play in a postseason tournament and we believe that we couldn't have drawn a tougher opponent in any tournament, besides the NCAA tournament, in Purdue. Our young men are extremely excited about the challenge."
The Leathernecks are 0-3 all-time versus Purdue. The first meeting between the two teams came in Western's season and home opener on December 7, 1939, with the Boilermakers winning 47-24. The Leathernecks played at Purdue in their season opener the following year, again on December 7, and lost 65-41. Most recently the two teams faced one another in the 1999-00 season in West Lafayette, Indiana on December 9 when Purdue downed WIU, 83-48.
Purdue, a member of the Big 10, owns a 15-17 overall record this season, and finished conference play with an 8-10 mark. The Boilermakers most recently dropped its first round Big 10 Tournament game to Nebraska, 57-55.
"Purdue obviously has a very good program with great tradition under the leadership of its head coach Matt Painter," continued coach Molinari. "They are playing very good basketball right now, proven by their win at Wisconsin towards the end of their regular season."
The two CBI appearances mark the only two Western Illinois men’s basketball postseason appearances in the program’s NCAA Division I history. The Leathernecks played in the CBI for the first time ever last season at Oregon State and fell to the Beavers, 80-59
Western enters postseason play with a 22-8 overall record, the program’s best-ever during its NCAA Division I era. The Leathernecks finished 13-3 in Summit League play, and recorded a 12-2 mark inside Western Hall.
“The 2012-13 men’s basketball team’s season has been historic, and we are excited that the Leathernecks have been invited to their second consecutive postseason tournament, the only two postseason appearances in our NCAA Division I history,” said Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. “The College Basketball Invitational is a great opportunity for head coach Jim Molinari and his team, and truly shows the strength and accomplishment of the men’s basketball program. The Leathernecks earned 22 wins this season, the most in our Division I history, and also earned a share of the program’s first-ever true regular season championship. The opportunity credits the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaches. This team’s goal was to play in a postseason tournament, and we are excited about the opportunity to participate in the CBI again.”
