IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fighting Leatherneck baseball used a total of 19-players in a 10-6 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Tuesday (Apr. 2). The game was the final non-conference contest of the year for the Purple & Gold and the 24th straight road game for the team.
The Hawkeyes recorded five hits in the first inning and scored five runs to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Iowa recorded three singles and two doubles in the inning to take the early lead.
The Leathernecks scored one run in the second inning after senior Steve Kedroski hit his second career triple to lead off the inning. Kedroski crossed the plate for Western after Neil DeCook had an RBI groundout.
Iowa scored five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead that would hold up the rest of the contest. The Black & Gold picked up their five runs on just two hits in the inning.
Western scored their second run in the fifth inning of the contest. Nate Ewing led off with his first career hit, a triple, and scored on a Brent Turner RBI groundout. Ewing finished the game with two runs scored to go along with his triple.
The Purple & Gold scored four more runs in the seventh inning to make the score 10-6. Western picked up two hits in the inning, highlighted by a Jake Moore two RBI double.
Neither team would cross the plate in the final two innings of the contest and Iowa came out on top 10-6. Kedroski and Mark Garton each had two hits apiece for the Leathernecks.
Western will be in action again this weekend as they start conference-play at home on Friday (Apr. 5) against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. at Alfred D. Boyer stadium.
