MACOMB, Ill. - The inaugural Western Illinois Purple and Gold Alumni Challenge has come to an end with the women's golf team finishing in first place among all the Leatherneck sports programs.

Based on the student-athlete alumni participation percentage for each sport program, Women's Golf captured the title with 111 points, with Swimming and Diving (77 points) finishing second. Women's Golf earned $2,500 towards their sport budget for their first place effort, while Swimming and Diving earned $1,500 for second. Baseball rounded out the top three with 38 points, earning $1,000.

"I'm really proud of our alumni for coming through for us," said Women's Golf head coach Lia Lukkarinen. "We have one of the smallest alumni base being a newer sport and I'm grateful for their support. We will continue our events to draw the alumni back to the University and Macomb, and thanks to their generosity it will enhance the Division I experience for our student-athletes."

"I was very pleased to see the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving alumni supported the program in such a strong way," said head coach Greg Naumann. "We have always had a strong following at meets, and now we can say that they are helping us in improving our current student-athletes' experience."

According to Baseball first-year head coach Ryan Brownlee, "I just want to say thank you to everyone who gave to the Purple & Gold Challenge. It is a huge benefit to all of our programs. I also want to thank all of our baseball alumni that decided to join the Leatherneck Club. There is power in numbers and if all Leatherneck Athletics Alumni can jump on board it will help all of us. It is a great day to be a Leatherneck."

Leatherneck Athletics welcomed 82 new Leatherneck Club members. Thanks to all of those who participated in the Purple & Gold Challenge. Leatherneck pride is very important to the current and incoming student-athletes as Leatherneck Athletics strives to provide excellence on and off of the field.
