MACOMB, Ill. – Extra innings were needed for game one of the weekend series between the Fighting Leathernecks and Bison on Friday (May 10). The Leathernecks came out on top 2-1 in the 10th inning after Zack Burling beat out an infield single that scored Tanner Glore.
Both Glore and Burling recorded multiple hits in the game for the Purple & Gold. Glore had three hits, which ties his career-high from earlier this season.
On the mound, Aaron Michel started for the Leathernecks and recorded a career-best eight strikeouts and allowed just one hit in 6.2 innings of work. Brian Loconsole (3-1) came in and threw 2.1 innings giving up just two hits while striking out two on his way to the win.
The Leathernecks got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after Burling singled to center and eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The next six innings would be a pitchers duel as the two teams combined for just three total hits. The Bison also capitalized on a wild pitch to score their lone run which came in the top half of the eighth inning. Jon Hechtner was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and crossed the plate to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team could get another run across in the next inning, which sent the game into extra innings. In the tenth, Glore led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brent Turner. Glore scored on Burling’s infield single to the shortstop to give the Leathernecks the 2-1 victory.
North Dakota State starting pitcher John Straka threw nine innings with six strikeouts and one run allowed on his way to the no decision. Kyle Kingsley (0-4) was handed the loss after allowing the game-winning run in the tenth.
Western improves to 15-29 overall this season and 6-11 in conference play. NDSU falls to 19-21 and 6-9 in league play.
The Leathernecks and Bison will be back in action for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon (May 11) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
