MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois junior Martinez Davis (Madisonville, KY/North Hopkins) has been named to the College Football Performance Awards watch list for the Defensive Back Award.
The preliminary list includes 36 players in the Football Championship Subdivision.
“Congratulations to Martinez Davis on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List,” CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith said. “Davis has the potential to become the second Western Illinois player to earn CFPA honors.”
All-American wide receiver Lito Senatus earned the CFPA Elite Wide Receiver Award following the 2010 season.
Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings in which players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions.
Davis not only led the Leathernecks with five interceptions in 2012, it put him in a tie for 10th nationally in that category and he tied for 49th in passes defended. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns (49 yards versus Indianapolis and 28 yards at South Dakota State). Davis recorded two interceptions in a game against Indy and at Missouri State.
A Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection, Davis also registered 38 tackles, four for loss, and one sack.
