PEORIA, Ill. - Western Illinois volleyball fell to the Bradley Braves 3-1 in the Leathernecks' 2013 season opener Friday evening (Aug. 30). The match was a part of the 2013 CEFCU Classic in Peoria, Ill.

"Tonight was a tough loss for us against a great Bradley team," said head coach April Hall. "Both teams battled back and forth and showed a lot of tenacity in their play. Although we were down two starters tonight, the team came together and took on the big roles we placed on them with stride."

WIU dropped the opening set, 26-24, earned a 25-22 victory in the second set, but fell in the final two sets by scores of 25-20 and 26-24.

Ann Miller led the way with 18 kills in the match, while Samantha Fournier killed 11 attempts and Heather Smith tallied nine kills.

Leatherneck setter Sarah Fetter dished out 45 assists for Western.

Defensively, Bailey Kaloupek and Miller each recorded 14 digs, while Fournier added 10 for Western.

Mallory Gibson notched a career-high 10 blocks while also recording five kills. Gibson's previous career-best was nine last season at home at Chicago State (Nov. 6).

"We took some time tonight to reflect on the things we can do better as a team and I truly believe we will bounce back tomorrow against UT-Martin and Maryland Eastern Shore," concluded Hall.

The Leathernecks continue play in the CEFCU Classic tomorrow (Aug. 31) against Tennessee Martin at 10 a.m. before concluding action in the tournament versus Maryland-Eastern Shore at 5 p.m.
