MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois swimming & diving opens the 2013-14 season with a home meet versus Saint Louis this Saturday (October 5) at Brophy Pool.

Naumann Thoughts: “On the season we're definitely looking at finishing better than we did last year in conference. On the women’s side, we ended up finishing last and I would like to see us finish in a higher position, whether that’s fifth place or sixth place. I think one of the things that’s allowing us to do that is the fact that we are building up our depth a little bit and we brought in some pretty strong swimmers as well.”

“On the men’s side, we’re looking to do the same thing. We brought in some solid guys after losing Josh Davis so we’re looking at really keeping our momentum going that we had last year. We went from being in sixth place overall in conference to being fifth so we’re moving in the right direction. I would like to see the guy’s team moving up to the third or fourth spot.“

“As we go through meet to meet, we're looking to try and improve upon how we did against teams last year. We did compete against some pretty tough teams; Saint Louis is one of them that’s a very superior program as well as the University of Iowa. I would like to be able to see our programs be a little bit closer as we compete against them and hopefully we can move in that direction this season.”

Team Captains: The 2013-14 captains for the women’s side are: Julia Rassmussen, Haley Brasile and Mary Betsworth. The captains for the men’s side are Kevin Arakaki and Tyler Neaveill.

Preseason Poll: The preseason poll was released on Thursday (Oct. 3) and was voted on by the head coaches. The Leatherneck men were chosen to finish in sixth place while the Western women were picked to finish in seventh place.

Returners: Western returns five All-League selections from a year ago in Matt Abercrombie, Jonathan Bond, Tyler Neaveill, Dylon Rykosky and Doug Ogilvie. Ogilvie is the two-time ‘Diver of the Year’ in the conference and qualified for the NCAA Zones for the second consecutive season in 2012-13.

Newcomers: The Leathernecks welcome in three new athletes on the men’s side and eight on the women’s side for the upcoming 2013-14 season.
