SDSU, NDSU First Summit League Tests for Women's Soccer

MACOMB, Ill. - After a 4-5-1 start to the 2013 campaign that included a victory over Northwestern, head coach Ted Flogaites and his squad turn their attention to Summit League action and a new start.

The Fighting Leathernecks begin their seven-game conference schedule at home against South Dakota State and North Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 4) and Sunday (Oct. 6). The Jackrabbits enter conference play at 5-3-2, while the Bison enter with a 4-6 record.



A LOOK AT THE JACKRABBITS: South Dakota State enters conference play third in The Summit League standings with a 5-3-2 record... After missing out on the conference tournament in 2012, the Jackrabbits have scored 16 goals this season (3rd), while limiting opponents to only eight goals (2nd)... Alyssa Brazil leads South Dakota State with four goals and two assists (10 points)... Diana Potterveld and Caylee Costello have also scored multiple goals for the Jackrabbits... In net, Nicole Inskeep has kept five clean sheets in her first 10 games... The freshman currently allows 0.75 goals per game (2nd in The Summit League) and has played every minute for South Dakota State in 2013... The Jackrabbits are led by 13th year head coach, Lang Wedemeyer.

SERIES HISTORY: The Leathernecks have just one win against South Dakota State since the two schools first met in 2004... The lone victory came in 2007, a 1-0 victory in Macomb... Since that time, Western Illinois has gone 0-5-1 against South Dakota State... The lone draw came on October 10, 2010, a 1-1 result in Brookings, South Dakota... Last year, Western Illinois lost to South Dakota State, 2-0, in Brookings.

A LOOK AT THE BISON: North Dakota State enters conference play with a 4-6 record, fifth in The Summit League standings... Since 2009, North Dakota State has finished in the top four, earning a bid to The Summit League Tournament each season... In 2010, NDSU represented The Summit League in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Western Illinois in the Summit League Championship... The Bison have scored 13 goals as a team (4th) and have conceded 23 (8th)... Freshman Lauren Miller has 12 points on the year after finding the net four times while assisting on four others... Anisha Kinnarath also has four goals for North Dakota State... The Bison as a team allow 2.27 goals per game... Katie McCormick and Sierra Bonham have made appearances in goal for the Bison, Bonham has started all but one match... Bonham has allowed 19 goals in just under 750 minutes, a 2.30 goals against average, but does have two shutouts to her name... The Bison are led by 2nd year head coach Mark Cook.
SERIES HISTORY: Nine Leathernecks remain from the 2010 squad that finished runners-up to North Dakota State... Western Illinois trails the all-time series 3-5-1 and have lost five straight to the Bison... Prior to 2009, the Leathernecks went 3-0-1 against NDSU, a stretch where the Leathernecks outscored the Bison 10-6.

LAST TIME OUT: The Fighting Leathernecks had last weekend off following losses to Valparaiso and Western Michigan the week prior.

SECOND SEASON: Since 2005, Western Illinois has been very successful during conference play... The Leathernecks are 20-11-1 at home and 4-3-1 in Summit League home-openers in that time... Western has outscored its opponents 82-66 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in conference matches.

HOME, SWEET HOME: Western Illinois has won five if its past seven matches in Macomb dating back to last season... Since 2007, Western Illinois is 28-13-4 at John Mackenzie Alumni Field.  

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Eight different Leathernecks have scored this season, only South Dakota and South Dakota State have more individual goal-scorers, while Denver also has eight... Freshman Tyra Markey and senior Kristin Becker are the only two players on the team to score multiple goals in 2013... Four fellow seniors have also found the back of the net for Western Illinois... The Leathernecks rank sixth in goals scored (10) in The Summit League.

BIG TEN, BIG WIN: The Leathernecks’ victory over Northwestern earlier this season was the first over a Big Ten school in program history.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP: It was two seniors who provided the scoring in the Leathernecks’ 2-1 win over Northwestern on August 23... Jordan Walgren scored a late goal to level the match before Kristin Becker scored directly off a corner in the second overtime.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Laura Atkinson was named The Summit League ‘Defensive Player of the Week’ for the sixth time in her career after her performance against Northwestern... The goalkeeper made nine saves against the Wildcats.

LEAGUE ROUND-UP: League leaders Denver travel to Fort Wayne on Saturday... The Coyotes of South Dakota travel to Omaha... Following Friday’s match against Western, South Dakota State head to Indianapolis  for a Sunday match against IUPUI... North Dakota State faces IUPUI on Friday before Sunday’s match against Western Illinois.  

DAVIS IS CLASS: Senior Amber Davis has been named one of 30 semifinalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award... The award is given to the student-athlete that best exemplifies the four C’s: Character, Community, Classroom and Competiton... The finalists for the award will be announced in October before the winner is announced at the Women’s College Cup in December... If Davis is named a finalist, there will be a public voting portion... Stay tuned to for further information... Davis currently has one goal and one assist this season while anchoring a Leatherneck defense that has recorded two shutouts.

PRESEASON HONORS: Western Illinois had five members of the 2013 squad earn preseason All-League honors from College Sports Madness... Skyler Jessop, Amber Davis and Laura Atkinson were named First Team All-Conference while Sarah Hall and Sloane Levin were named to the Second Team... Atkinson was also named ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’... In 2012, Davis and Atkinson were each named First Team All-Summit League with Atkinson earning the league’s ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ award as well.

RETURNERS: Leatherneck women’s soccer returns 21 players from the 2012 squad that finished with 13 wins, second most in program history... Among the returning letter-winners are 2012 Summit League ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ Laura Atkinson, Summit League All-Tournament Team selection Jordan Spaciel and First Team All-Summit League selection Amber Davis.

CAPTAINS: Four members of the Leatherneck women’s soccer senior class, Sloane Levin, Amber Davis, Amy Bennett and Jordan Spaciel will captain the squad this season.

AT THE HELM: Ted Flogaites became the fifth Western Illinois women’s soccer head coach in July 2012... He joined the Leatherneck family following a five year stint at Hastings College where he amassed a record of 76-22-9 for a .745 winning percentage... In his first year with the Leathernecks, he led the squad to a 13-win season, two short of tying the program record... Flogaites graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1999 and was a member of the Gaucho men’s soccer team.

PRESEASON POLL: The Leathernecks were picked to finish third in the 2013 Summit League Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll... Western Illinois tallied 34 points... Denver was picked to finish first with 49 points and Fort Wayne was projected second with 39 points.
