MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's golf opens the 2014 spring season with the first-ever WIU Carlton Oaks Invitational in Santee, California. The two-day, three-round invite will feature nine teams and is slated to begin Monday, February 10th.

COACH MEL BLASI'S THOUGHTS: "We are very excited to be hosting our first winter tournament at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee, California. Carlton Oaks is an outstanding public golf facility and is a great test for the collegiate golfer. We have a nice mix of Division I teams in the field for our first of what we hope becomes an annual event."

FALL RECAP: The Leathernecks played in five tournaments throughout the 2013 fall season with a stroke average of 303.07. Nate Davis led WIU with a 74.7 stroke average, while Nick Steffens' had the Leathernecks' best finish of the season, earning medalist honors in the at the Illinois State D.A. Weibring Invitational. SPRING SCHEDULE: Western is slated to host two invites during spring season, and take part in four other meets prior to The Summit League championships in Keller, Texas. "I am optimistic about our spring season," said head men's golf coach Mel Blasi. "We have a great spring schedule that gives us a chance to play against excellent competition on some really great golf courses. During the fall season we saw the emergence of several underclassmen, highlighted by sophomore Nick Steffens' victory at the Illinois State D.A. Weibring Invitational." ABOUT THE COURSE: Carlton Oaks is one of the top-rated golf courses in the San Diego area and has a long history of hosting numerous prestigious golf events including the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 2010, U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur qualifiers and a Canadian Tour qualifier. The course has hosted the San Diego Junior Masters, bringing 400 players ages 8-18 from all over the world for a tune-up before the Callaway Junior World Championships in San Diego the following week.
