MACOMB, Ill. - Fighting Leatherneck tennis was defeated 6-1 by Summit League foe IUPUI on Saturday (April 7). The loss brings Western Illinois to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in league play while IUPUI is 4-0 in conference contests.
No. 1 doubles tandem of Patrick Hammers and Ben Yue turned in one of two Leatherneck wins with a 8-7 (3) hard fought victory over the Jaguars.
In other doubles action, No. 2 duo of Jim Capablo and Andrew Yopp were bested 8-2, while No. 3 doubles pair of Daniel Sweeney and Jesus Roman were shut out 8-0.
Hammers played to a No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0 victory, while Yue fell in No. 2 singles play in a close 6-2, 6-3 match.
Capalbo at No. 3, Yopp at No. 4 and Sweeney at No. 5 singles all put points on the board, were defeated in the end. Roman was shut out at No. 6 singles to round out scoring.
Western Illinois returns to the court on Tuesday (April 10) against SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
