MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois Football returned to Hanson Field for the final two weeks of spring practice, working out Monday afternoon (April 9) in the 10th of 15 sessions. The Leathernecks hit the field following last Friday's scrimmage, and head coach Mark Hendrickson noted some players were still recovering.

"Some of the players were a little sore from Friday's scrimmage and having some free time this weekend. After we stretched and our initial off-of-the-ball drills, the spirits, the enthusiasm and the energy were good. Following that we had a good practice today," said Hendrickson. "We've had 10 good practices, we are thankful for that. The players are determined to make them all count."

Hendrickson noted that the next practice in this short week of work will take place on Thursday night. Currently the Leathernecks have three games at night during the 2012 season and could potentially have more depending on kickoff times yet to be determined. He said going out under the lights will be a beneficial move, and one they'll do as well during fall camp.

"We've only got five (practices) left, obviously we'd like to have a lot more, but we only have five to go. Thursday night we are going out under the lights at Hanson Field, really for a change of pace. I know the players are looking forward to that."

With four practices left before the spring finale on April 21, the fifth-year head coach noted competition going on at certain positions.

"We do have some spots where there is good competition this spring, but other spots we are missing some people that are nicked up... Some are being held out of spring due to (injuries) last fall, although they will be full-go in August," said Hendrickson. "That has cut down on some of the competition at certain positions, but at other positions there's no question there's a lot of competition going on right now. That's always a plus. The coaches do a good job of rotating at those positions."
