ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Western Illinois junior Fredson Salomon (Miami, FL/North Miami/ASA) was honored by the Missouri Valley Football Conference as 'Newcomer of the Week' following his performance at South Dakota. It's the first weekly award for the junior wide receiver.
Salomon entered the game with only 92 receiving yards and no TDs. He caught three passes for 109 yards and two scores (both in the second half) as Western came-from-behind for a 24-17 victory.
He caught a 25-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then found himself wide open on a 66-yard scoring strike midway through the fourth that proved to be the game-winner. Those were the first two touchdown receptions for Western this year.
His 109 receiving yards marks the first 100-yard game by a Leatherneck in 11 games. Salomon also recorded 55 yards on three kickoff returns, including a season-long of 25 yards.
He overtook the team-lead with 201 receiving yards on 14 receptions this season.
Western (3-2 overall, 1-1 MVFC) travels to South Dakota State this Saturday (Oct. 13) for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The game will be televised live on Mediacom and can also be seen on ESPN3.
