Men's Basketball Announces 2012-13 Schedule

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois head men's basketball coach Jim Molinari announced the Fighting Leathernecks 2012-13 schedule monday (Oct. 15) that features 14 games inside Western Hall. The Leathernecks' schedule also includes competition in the 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

After making its first-ever Division I postseason appearance, Western is slated to play 11 games against teams that advanced to postseason play last year. Fellow Summit League members South Dakota State (NCAA Tournament), North Dakota State (College Basketball Invitational) and Oakland (CollegeInsider.com Tournament) each advanced to the postseason, as well as Savannah State (NIT), Evansville (CBI), Buffalo (CIT) and Yale (CIT).

Prior to the team's season and home opener November 10th against Wabash, Western is scheduled to play host to Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) and Missouri University of Science and Technology for exhibition contests on November 1st and 5th, respectively.

After playing their first game at home, the Leathernecks hit the road for eight straight games beginning with the first part of a home-and-home series with SIU-Edwardsville on November 14th. Western then takes part in the 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer tournament hosted by Evansville, November 16-18, where it faces Buffalo, Evansville and Yale.

The Coaches vs. Cancer Classic is an annual basketball event hosted by the Coaches vs. Cancer program to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save more lives from cancer and create a world with more birthdays. Teams participating in the this year's event include: Brigham Young, Buffalo, Evansville, Florida State, Georgia State, Monmouth, Notre Dame, Saint Joseph’s, South Alabama, Tennessee State, Western Illinois and Yale. The Leathernecks kick-off their second home-and-home series of 2012-13 on November 24th at Savannah State, prior to beginning Summit League play at South Dakota on November 29 (televised on Fox College Sports) and at Kansas City on December 1st.

Western concludes their eight-game road swing December 5th at Eastern Illinois before beginning a seven-game homestand versus non-conference opponents SIU-Edwardsville (December 8) and UIC (December 18).

A pair of Summit League home games against Oakland (Dec. 27) and Fort Wayne (Dec. 29) concludes the year of 2012 for the Leathernecks, before finishing their home-and-home series against Savannah State in Macomb on January 2nd. Home games against IUPUI (Jan. 5) and Greenville (Jan. 9) wrap-up Western's seven-game homestand.

The Leathernecks' next nine games come against Summit League opponents, starting with the conference's newest member Omaha on the road January 12th. Western welcomes South Dakota State and North Dakota State to Macomb on January 17th and 19th, respectively, before three straight league road games at Fort Wayne (Jan. 24), Oakland (Jan. 26) and IUPUI (Feb. 2).

The Mavericks of Omaha will journey to Macomb on February 7th for a league game against the Leathernecks. Western then makes its way north to the Dakotas for road games against the NDSU Bison (Feb. 14) and the SDSU Jackrabbits (Feb. 16). The Leathernecks' game at SDSU will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports.

Western's last three regular season games are slated to take place inside Western Hall starting with a ESPN BracketBusters game. Last season for the first time in program history Western took part in the event at Evansville, and this season they play host to an opponent to be named in a 11th annual ESPN BracketBusters game on February 23rd.

The Leathernecks welcome Kansas City (Feb. 28) and South Dakota (March 2) to Macomb, concluding their schedule.

The top eight teams advance to the Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the following week.
